'Spring' into action - What to do when your garage door spring breaks

See what we did there?

Garage door springs are the mechanism that help your sectional garage door open and close easily. They come in single or double options and are the counterbalancing component that helps the door go up and down with no issues.

Whilst it is ok to (carefully) open your garage door when the spring is broken, we recommend contacting @garagerollerdoorservices to help you out and replace them as soon as practical to keep your door in tip top working order!

Will a garage door still operate with a broken spring?

Yes, but it will be super heavy and will take some effort. Also, trying to use the garage door motor while the spring is broken can cause wear and tear on your motor, causing it to burn out.

So don't ignore the problem and hope for the best, otherwise you may need to replace not only the springs, but also the motor, at a much larger cost and time factor.

What happens when a garage door spring breaks?

The door won't work as it should. it will be heavy, and you will typically hear the motor run but nothing will happen. You may have also heard a big bang, this would be the spring snapping, not ideal!

How do I know if my spring is broken?

A good way to diagnose the issue is to inspect the bar above the door, if the springs look like they are in pieces, you will need to get them replaced.

We recommend not trying to open the garage door if the spring has broken and calling the professionals in this case.

If your car is stuck and you need to get it out, In a pinch, you can use the motor to assist with this. Enlist the help of a mate, keep your fingers away from the pinch points, and use the motor and your mate to guide the door up until it is resting on the horizontal bars.

Once the car is clear, do the above process in reverse, making sure to gently guide the door down so as not to injure yourself or further damage the panels. Handy hint - keep those toes and fingers clear!

Typically spring replacement will take about an hour and both springs will need to be replaced to ensure the door remains in good working order.

So now you know about garage door spring replacement.
